Leta Fincher

Apr 2021

This is a great class! Leta is not the type to blow your socks off with her lecture style, she's more subtle but leads discussion really well and still manages to make sure you engage. This was my favorite class last semester. The professor is one of the foremost scholars researching the impacts of economic reforms in China on gender and class inequities, and it shows. You will learn so much in this class, and also have some freedom to research topics interesting to you under the umbrella of the class concept. You'll leave with a historical basis for the Chinese Communist Party from its early days to the present, and also a critical understanding of current social issues in China from Hong Kong to Xinjiang. She focuses on the lines of inequity that reforms follow, specifically referencing marriage practices and migration among other subjects.
