Abdelrazzaq Ben Tarif

Nov 2020

I have mixed feelings about this class. On the one hand, Professor Tarif is super funny and laidback. He is the easiest grader and doesn't force you to speak Arabic the entire class period, unlike some language professors. The material itself is interesting if you like learning new languages and the textbook(s) provide cool information about Middle Eastern culture. On the other hand, Arabic is not for the faint of heart. Because it (obviously) uses a whole different alphabet than Latin-based languages, it requires a lot of effort to learn the vocab and grammar. Also, despite being super laidback, Professor Tarif can sometimes be difficult to talk to. I feel like he gets impatient when I ask questions, which can be off-putting. I usually just refer to the internet instead of going to office hours because it's just easier. Also, because it is an introductory course, you meet four days a week. Sometimes it's nice because you create a community within the class, but it can also be exhausting. Overall, don't take this class unless you are prepared to put a lot of time and effort into it. I definitely spend the most amount of time on this course out of all my classes. Even though Prof. Tarif is a REALLY easy grader, you still won't succeed unless you practice the language and study.
